Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)

A Male Breast Reduction helps men who have issues with the appearance of their chest. The chest can appear similar to female breasts, either from glandular cases, an excess of fatty tissue, or gynecomastia. A male breast reduction, also called gynecomastia surgery, will help return the chest to a more proper appearance and will enhance a man’s self-confidence.

There are two main issues as to why a male breast reduction is necessary. The first is glandular which creates a dense breast tissue, and the other is from excess amounts of fat. Each reason has its own procedure.

Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia. For glandular issues, incisions are made halfway around the nipple and the tissue is removed with the help of fiber-optic illumination.

For excess fat, the reduction is made by the use of liposuction treatment using small punctures to remove fat. Drains and a chest binder are employed for compression and comfort.

Any discomfort a man might experience is easily controlled with medication. Generally, drains are used for up to 5 days while the binder is needed for about 2 weeks. Normal activity for the male can start about a week after gynecomastia surgery with more excessive activity in 3 weeks.

Will I have excess skin after liposuction?

If you are a patient with a considerable amount of fat tissue, a portion of skin may need to be removed during gynecomastia surgery. As scarring can become an issue, we often recommend for a male to receive the liposuction and allow ample time for healing before deciding if it is necessary for skin to be removed.

What are some causes of male breasts?

The most common cause of male breasts, or gynecomastia, are medications that treat hyper-acidity in the stomach and drugs used by body-builders to bulk up (some legal, others not). In other men, male breasts can form as part of the aging process.
