For men and women looking to remove excess fat that diet and exercise can’t seem to shed, liposuction is an ideal procedure that can help you look slimmer and give your body a better looking contour.

The most commonly treated areas are hips, abdomen, thighs, upper arms, ankles, and under the chin. Some men receive liposuction as a part of male breast reduction as well. The result of liposuction is an improved contour that helps balance the features of your body. After the procedure, both men and women find they have more confidence in their look and can choose clothes that fit them better.

General anesthesia is used to perform the liposuction surgery. First, a tumescent solution is used in the areas that fat will be removed. The solution helps swell fat cells and constrict the blood vessels, making it easier for the doctor to locate the fat as well as help minimize bleeding and bruising.

After the tumescent solution is used, the doctor uses cannulas (small tubes) to suck out the fat. The cannulas are inserted through small incisions around the area of surgery and the fat is taken out of the body. The procedure should only last about an hour, after which, the area of liposuction is wrapped in a support garment to help shrink the skin and prevent bruising.

It will take about a week before a patient can resume normal activity. Bruising fades in about two to four week with full recovery by the fifth week. However, even after you have recovered, the results of liposuction can continue to improve for up to three months.

Can the fat return?

There is always the possibility that the fat can return. Even after liposuction has been performed, the doctors will leave a small layer of fat between the skin and the muscle for a more natural look. Without proper diet and exercise, that safety layer can gain some weight back. That is why we encourage our patients to maintain a balanced diet and exercise routine after the surgery.

Can liposuction replace dieting?

No. Liposuction is for minimal fat loss, from five to ten pounds and should not be considered for over wall weight loss. Diet and exercise are the best ways to lose weight and find your ideal look, and liposuction is best used to concentrate on one specific problem area.

How long would I need to wear the support garment?

Support garments are very helpful in reshaping your body and offering support to the areas of surgery. This support allows for the body to finish absorbing the residual fat to achieve the optimal contour and shape. We recommend using the support garment for at least four or five days, and supportive clothing such as spandex for at least a month.
