4 Best Cosmetic Treatments for Wrinkles Around Your Lips

One of the more tell-tale signs of aging are the presence of wrinkles around your lips. Your face is one of the first things people see when they meet you in person. When someone is talking to you in person, their gaze tends to first center on your nose and then go slightly downwards. If there are wrinkles around your lips, it tends to give the other person the impression that you’re getting up there in age.

The three main causes of wrinkles above and around your lips are smoking, sun exposure, and old age. Smoking wreaks havoc on the human face and causes premature aging lines and spots to appear everywhere. Too much sun exposure (without skin protection) will also cause wrinkles and creases to appear on the skin, especially in those people with fair skin. Old age is just that: old age. There’s nothing you can do to prevent yourself from getting older.

Some people are more fortunate than others in that their genetics are not pre-dispositioned to acquiring heavy lines and wrinkles around our faces. Yet sooner or later everyone will get some form of wrinkles or age lines. Fortunately, there are many treatments out there that can help reduce or eliminate wrinkles around your lips.

Collagen Induction Therapy (treats wrinkles and fine lines)

One of the easier and safer ways to improve upon the wrinkles on and around your lips is the collagen induction therapy. At The Baltimore Center, we use a medical device called the Collagen P.I.N. that resembles a pen and has 12 or 36 micro needles attached to it. A sterile saline solution is applied to your skin and then the pen is adjusted (via the aesthetician turning a small dial) to the parameters of your face. The pen is then gently dragged along the lines and wrinkles of your face.

The collagen induction therapy works by creating open wounds on your face. The wounds are extremely small, and invisible to the naked eye. Your body is constantly healing itself and when it encounters the small holes that the Collagen P.I.N. pen made on your face, your body goes into healing over-drive. It produces more collagen (the stuff that young people have a lot of and which is responsible for making their faces so smooth) and it kick-starts the healing process.

The end result is a smoother face, more radiant glow and of course, the lessening of age lines and wrinkles around your lips. The overall healing time is anywhere from 12-48 hours. You will most likely experience some redness on the areas of your face that were treated and this usually goes away within 1-2 days. As time goes by, your face continues to heal itself and the wrinkles and age lines tend to lessen in intensity. It could take several treatments and up to 6 months before you see the full benefits of the collagen induction therapy.

Chemical Peels

Another safe and non-invasive procedure to remove fine lines and wrinkles is a chemical peel. They have been around for many years and have been tweeked to the point of perfection. Sometimes called “designer chemical peels”, they are intended to remove the surface layer of skin that contains the wrinkles, fine lines and dead skin.

Prior to a chemical peel, it’s critical that you inform your aesthetician if you are using any other chemical facial products or medications. They should be discontinued at least 3 days prior to the chemical peel treatment. It’s also advised that you wear sunscreen 4-6 weeks after your skin peel. It will take a few weeks to full heal up and see the benefits of the peel, so be sure to take care of your skin in this critical time period. If a deeper chemical peel is used, you won’t be able to use sunscreen at all. In this case it’s advised that you do not go out into the sun at all during the healing period.

There are varying strengths of chemical peels and at the very top is a “physician strength” peel. The first 3 levels of a peel are light, moderate and deep. Light being mostly used for weddings and other events. It’s the lightest of all 3 peels and it takes the least time to recover from. The deep peel is reserved for those with deep lines, sun damage and acne scars. The physician strength peel should only be used on those who have advanced aging or facial scars as they will respond best to this kind of treatment.

Juvederm and Restylane Fillers

Juvederm and Restylane are both fillers that are designed to fill in the lines and wrinkles. It has been said that these two treatments are better than Botox for lip wrinkles. Botox is a muscle relaxer while fillers smooth the lines and wrinkles out by filling them in. Sometimes it is advised to use both. Ask your aesthetician for their recommendation as to which procedure(s) you should opt for.

Restylane and Juvederm work by filling in the troughs, dark circles and wrinkles with a hyaluronic acid gel. The gel was designed to mimic the natural hyaluronic acid gel found in human beings. The beauty of this treatment is that since it’s natural, water in your skin tends to bind better to the gel and this in turn gives very natural-looking volume to the areas around your lips. It could take upwards of 6-9 months to see optimal results.

Botox Treatments

Botox is probably one of the most famous treatments out there and it is very popular for a reason: It works and it works very well. However, in order for the patient to see optimal results, it can take several weeks for the Botox to fully “kick in”. Success also depends on the skill of the aesthetician applying the Botox treatment to your face.

Another critical success factor is how well you take care of your face immediately after treatment. It is advised that you do not lie down on the couch or take a nap immediately after receiving Botox injections. You should remain upright either sitting in a chair (or on the couch) or standing.

Botox is a naturally occurring toxin that medical experts have rendered safe to use on the human face. In the hands of a trained medical professional, Botox can help smooth out wrinkles and lines on and around your upper lip. The only real downside to Botox is that is usually lasts anywhere from 4-6 months. Generally speaking, men require more Botox than women, so it tends to be a bit pricier for men.

It is very easy to tell someone’s age by just looking at their lips. If there are a lot of wrinkles or lines, then most people tend to assume that the person is “up there in age”. The best way to regain the youthful looks you used to enjoy is to undergo one of the above 4 procedures. At the Baltimore Center, our expert aestheticians will listen to your concerns and then advise you on the right procedure to help you remove fine lines and wrinkles from around your lips.
